Edward Elgar
Instrumentation: Orchester
Edward Elgar composed “Salut d’amour” (op. 12) in 1888 for his fiancée Alice Roberts. Since she spoke German fluently, he initially called the piece “Liebesgruß” (Greeting of Love). The work was originally meant to be for violin and piano; only later did Elgar set it for orchestra (1889).
This arrangement retains the essential character of the original instrumentation but it has been necessary to simplify certain aspects of the work.
In order that it can be played by different ensembles, there is quite a degree of flexibility as regards the instruments which can be employed, e.g. Woodwind II can be played by both the flute and the oboe.
The piece sounds well rounded even when played just by strings; additional instruments will enrich the sound. The arrangement has been transposed from the original E major to D major, thereby making it much easier to play.
The piece is easy to moderately difficult to play; the performance time is approx. 4 minutes.
