The Mass „Defensor Pacis“ (Defenser of Peace) was composed by Benno Ammann for the canonisation of the Hermit Nicolas of Flue (1417-1487) and bears the sub-title „in honorem S. Nicolai Helvetii Eremitae“ („in honour of the Swiss Saint and Hermit Nicolas of Flue“). It was sung for the first time on the 15 th May, 1947, on the above-mentioned occasion in the Basilica of St. Peter (Rome), by the Choir of the Cappella Sixtina under the direction of S. Ecc. Don Lorenzo Perosi, permanent maestro of the Cappella Musicale Pontificia. The Missa „Defensor Pacis“ is a grandly constructed choral work and with its dimensions in the first line is intended for high festivals and extraordinary occasions.
